Can't We All Just Get Along? Obviously not anymore

With all that's going on right now, I'm more convinced than ever that our society has broken apart in such a way that we have irreconcilable differences. We no longer have a common set of morals and values.

Half of us want to transform into an authoritarian nationalistic dictatorship, and the rest of us want to preserve our liberal democracy. We seem to move farther apart every day that goes by. I see no path to reconciliation.

I remain baffled as to why, but if half the country wants to live under the principles of Project 2025, they should be free to do so. Isn't the freedom to choose what America's supposed to be about? But those who want to curb others' rights and freedoms shouldn't be able to force the rest of us to be under the thumb of their fascist principles, which is what's happening now.

The 14 Characteristics of Fascism

Here's something else to consider that should frighten everyone. Suppose voters are able to flip Congress in 2026 and the White House in 2028. The people who support DJT and his authoritarian agenda will still be around. They're full of rage and hate, seem to have almost no emotional control, and they're heavily armedI can't conceive of a scenario in which they'd passively give up the power and influence DJT has gifted them and simply fade away.

I truly feel like this country needs to split up so these two very distinct ideological sides can live the way they wish.

I had honestly expected that once DJT started implementing his plans, many people who voted for him would have second thoughts. That's not happening. I take polls with a grain of salt, but they show that public opinion is NOT swinging. In fact, even after all the chaos surrounding ICE raids, polls show that Americans who were asked approve of how the government is dealing with undocumented immigrants by eight points.

I will never become remotely MAGA - even with a gun held to my head. I've cherished the freedoms I've had my whole life and will die before I surrender them. I'm less impacted by the behavior of this regime than almost anyone based on my straight white maleness, but watching the way so many others are being treated makes my heart ache.

The problem is that there are no clear geographic lines to guide us in how we might split, but in the modern world, contiguousness might not be as much of an issue. Perhaps if we could ignore geography, states could just choose which side they wish to join. Neither Alaska nor Hawaii is geographically contiguous (not to mention several territories), and we've had no issues with them being part of the U.S.

I mourn the America I grew up in and which has given me a great life. I wish I could envision another path forward, but I can't.
